This consulting services (“the Services”) requires the consultant to describe the practices related to transhipment, examine the impacts both positive and negatives of the recent growth of tuna transhipment activities in the Funafuti lagoon, and develop a plan to minimize the threats and develop a plan to minimize the threats and develop the opportunities that this activity provides.

The Tuvalu Fisheries Department is inviting suitably qualified young persons of a minimum age of 18 years to fill the vacant position of Nui island Data Collector for the Tuvalu Fisheries Department.

Applicants must be physically and mentally fit and should be permanent residents of the island of Nui and/or Nukulaelae, as the selection will be island-based. The objective of the recruitment is to create a team of data collectors to collect information on fishing activities and catches on the islands of Tuvalu on behalf of the Fisheries Department.

The TFSP2 project under the Tuvalu Fisheries Department is recruiting a Project Manager who will work closely with the Fisheries Adviser and take on the management of the project over the next year or so. We are looking for a person with a University degree in a subject relevant to Fisheries and/or Project Management. Excellent communication skills in English, computer skills, knowledge of Government procedures, and experience in project planning and reporting are needed. Above all, you should have a keen interest in helping the management and development of Tuvalu’s fisheries.

This is a contract position with annual contracts for a maximum of 4 years. The starting salary is $1,050 per fortnight with a housing allowance of $1,000 per month.

Capacity development on Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) for the Lofeagai community

The Lofeagai community developed their understanding of Artisanal FADs and their importance, facilitated by officers of the Departments of Fisheries and Meteorology, yesterday evening 22 February 2022, at the Lofeagai Community Hall.

3 officers conducted the workshop. Pafini Fepuali Fisheries Operation & Development officer presented what is a FAD and its importance. Nelly Seniola Senior Fisheries Officer for Development and Training presented the types of FAD utilized in the area around Funafuti. Tavau  Vaaia Simeona, a Forecast Scientific meteorological officer, shared what a wave buoy is, how important it is and how it works. Over 20 individuals from the Lofeagai community participated in the artisanal FAD outreach.

Nelly Seniola, Senior Fisheries Officer, stated “The artisanal FAD awareness-raising is part of the Fisheries work plan activity for this year in collaboration with the meteorological department. Lofeagai is the first community we started with. Educating communities about artisanal FADs and their importance is critical,” Nelly added.

A Lofeagai community participant, Timaio Auega showed his gratitude to the Fisheries and meteorology team for sharing the information on artisanal FAD and their importance which he found interesting and significant.

The artisanal FAD capacity building will continue to Fakaifou community today evening at 7 pm, followed by the Vaiaku community tomorrow evening at 7 pm also.

Guidelines to get a Tuvalu Fishing Permit

Below are the steps and guidelines on how to apply and get a Tuvalu Fishing Permit.

  1. Company contact Tuvalu Fisheries Department, requesting Fishing Permit;
  2. Negotiation between Fisheries Official on behalf of the Government of Tuvalu with Company official;
  3. Signing of Access Agreement between the 2 parties Fisheries official and Fishing Company;
  4. Company official contact Tuvalu Fisheries Department through Licensing officer (via email);
  5. Licensing officer instruct Fishing Company on how to lodge application online to PNA FIMS;

  6. Licensing officer send invoice to Fishing Company;
  7. License certificate is delivered once payment is remit by Fishing Company;
  8. License certificate is signed by Director of Fisheries and stamped office seal;

The Tuvalu Fisheries Department (TFD) is seeking quotations for the supply of 7 small flake ice machines for installation in Community Fisheries Centres in the outer islands of Tuvalu.

Specifications:

We require a flake ice machine that can produce 350-500 kgs of ice per 24 hours under ambient conditions of water temperature 25○C; and ambient temperature 35○C. This should be a robust machine, designed for trouble-free operation in a harsh and very corrosive climate. Single-phase power (220v) is preferred and should be protected against power cuts and voltage fluctuation. This should be a self-contained unit that can just be plugged in and connected to a water supply to start operation. It should be provided with a suitable insulated ice storage bin with a capacity of 300-500 kgs of ice.

The quotation should include shipping and insurance for delivery to Funafuti port.

Submission of proposals

Interested bidders should submit the following information in support of their proposal on the attached forms:

  • A technical specification and any brochures of the machinery they propose to supply;
  • A price quotation, preferably in Australian dollars (AUD).
