TFA Strengthens Capacity to Support Tuvalu’s Future Access to the European Union Seafood Market

Three Tuvalu Fisheries Authority officers participate in regional training to strengthen seafood safety, quality assurance and export readiness.

The Tuvalu Fisheries Authority (TFA) is strengthening its technical capacity as part of its ongoing efforts to help Tuvalu meet the requirements for accessing the European Union (EU) seafood market.

Three TFA officers are attending the National Competent Authority (NCA) Officer Training Programme in Suva, Fiji. The training aims to strengthen the capacity of fisheries officers to understand and implement seafood safety standards, quality assurance systems and regulatory requirements associated with international seafood exports.

The programme is organised by the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) through the Pacific-European Union Marine Partnership Programme (PEUMP II), bringing together fisheries officers from Pacific Island countries to enhance their technical knowledge and skills.

Strengthening Seafood Safety and Quality Assurance

The training covers key areas of seafood safety and regulatory compliance, including fish inspection, auditing, traceability, certification, freshness and quality assessment, food safety microbiology, and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP).

These areas are essential for ensuring that fishery products meet the required safety and quality standards throughout the supply chain, from harvesting and handling to processing and export.

Through participation in the programme, the three TFA officers have the opportunity to strengthen their understanding of the systems and procedures required to support effective official controls and compliance with international market requirements.

Working Towards European Union Market Access

Currently, Tuvalu does not have the necessary regulatory approval to export fishery products to the European Union market. Gaining access requires the country to demonstrate that its competent authority arrangements, official control systems and seafood safety measures meet the applicable EU requirements.

The TFA is working towards strengthening these systems and developing the technical capacity needed to progress Tuvalu’s future application for access to the EU market.

Building the knowledge and expertise of TFA officers is an important part of this process. Effective inspection, monitoring, traceability and compliance systems will be essential in demonstrating that Tuvalu’s fishery products can meet the required standards.

Access to the EU seafood market could create new opportunities for Tuvalu’s fisheries sector, expand potential export markets and contribute to the long-term economic development of the country.

Building Capacity for the Future

The participation of the three TFA officers reflects the Authority’s commitment to professional development, stronger regulatory systems and sustainable fisheries development.

Through regional cooperation and continued capacity building, the TFA aims to strengthen Tuvalu’s readiness to meet international seafood safety requirements and work towards accessing new markets for its fisheries products.

The Tuvalu Fisheries Authority acknowledges the importance of regional partnerships and technical support in advancing these efforts.

Strengthening capacity today to create greater opportunities for Tuvalu’s fisheries tomorrow.
