Launch of FAD Buoy Retrieval and Recycling Project in Tuvalu

Funafuti, Tuvalu / Oosterhout, Netherlands – October 2025

Stichting Pacifical Foundation and the Tuvalu Fisheries Authority (TFA) have formally signed an agreement to implement a pioneering FAD Buoy Retrieval and Recycling Program in Tuvalu.

The project aims to reduce marine debris, promote sustainable Tuna fisheries, and create local economic opportunities for the community by retrieving, refurbishing, and recycling free drifting buoys used in industrial Tuna fishing. It also supports regional research through data collection in collaboration with the Pacific Community.

The program will introduce a reward scheme for recovered buoys, local awareness campaigns, and partnerships with waste management organizations for responsible recycling. A joint governance committee will oversee progress and ensure transparency and accountability.

The initiative will run until December 2026 with funding of up to AUD 40,000 provided by the Foundation. After running and evaluating this Pilot, the intention is to expand this program to other Pacific Island countries .

“Through this partnership, we hope to demonstrate that small island nations can lead the way in practical, community-based marine sustainability,” said Willem Huisman, Chair of Stichting Pacifical Foundation. Samasoni Finikaso, Managing Director of the TFA, emphasized the local benefits: “This project will not only help clean our shores but also provide valuable income opportunities for families across Tuvalu.”

This collaboration reinforces both organizations’ commitment to the protection of Pacific marine ecosystems and the promotion of sustainable, inclusive fisheries management in the region.
